DROWN by Junot Diaz
Publisher: The Berkley Publishing Group 1996
Drown by Junot Diaz is a novel made up with different fiction stories whose setting changes constantly. It can go from and ordinary boy having fun in the Dominican Republic, to a drug dealer in the Bronx York, and one chapter having a strict father and the next not having one at all. For example Chapter 2, which took place in New York, shows Junot as a little boy who is afraid to talk girls get disciplined by his father when they were on their way to a family party. When in chapter 3 he doesn't have a father and instead of being a good boy hes selling drugs, using drugs, and talking about his ex-girlfriend. My favorite chapter of the book was chapter 8, "How to date a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl, or halfie." In this chapter Junot Diaz put the readers in different situations with different race girls. He gives you his guidelines on how to get them to have sex with you. He said " A brown girl has hip and a thick ass but she wont be quick about letting you touch, a white girl might just give it up right then, a black girl will tell you to treat me real bad, and a hafie might lean back breaking away from you." I like this chapter because it was funny and stereotypical.
Quote: "This, he said, is shit." (Diaz pg4).
Reaction:
This quote was said by Junot's big brother Rafa when they were bored in the campo of the Dominican Republic. I reacted to this quote because i relate to it. This is exactly how i feel when i go from the city in the Dominican Republic to the campo. There's nothing to do, no water, no electricity, its always hot, and no entertainment . . its just hell.
